An adapted account of famed 17th century pirate Captain William Kidd (Charles Laughton), who, in an effort to enhance his fortune, persuades King William III (Henry Daniell) to hire him as the guardian of a royal ship carrying a cargo of his majesty's treasure. Kidd has the task of keeping enemy ships at bay to allow the King's riches a safe voyage, but the Captain has his own greedy plans for the loot.
